🅱️ Beginning sounds worksheets A–Z

Ages 4–6Phonemic awareness · letter soundsBlack and white · US Letter or A4

Phonemic awareness starts with hearing the first sound in a word. Each page shows a letter and nine pictures with their names. Children say each name out loud and color the three pictures that begin with that sound, for example bee, ball and bear for B. The other pictures were chosen so they do not start with the same sound. X is the exception: few simple words begin with x, so the X page asks for the sound at the end (box, fox, ox).

Frequently asked questions

How do I use this page?

Point to each picture and say its name slowly with your child. Ask: “Does it start with /b/?” Color the ones that do. The names are printed under the pictures to help adults.

Why are vowels tricky?

Vowels can make more than one sound. The vowel pages use the short sound where possible (apple, egg, igloo, octopus), but umbrella, unicorn and unicycle show that u can sound different. Talk about that with your child.

Why does C not include kite?

C and K often make the same sound. To avoid confusion, the C page never uses k-words as the “wrong” pictures, and the K page never uses c-words.

Can I print every letter?

Yes. Choose “All letters A–Z” for 26 pages or download the PDF pack.
